The only secret to losing weight
The only weight loss tip you'll ever need ...
I have been on a weight loss journey since I joined
college. I have tried so many diets and workouts, and every time I lose weight
it comes back to me one way or another. It has been a vicious cycle of weight
loss and weight gain for me. There have been times when I have even tried fad
diets - eating just a banana or eggs for a whole day to lose weight fast. But I
could never avoid it forever.
In college, I searched the internet for new diets I
could follow or exercises I could do to lose weight fast. And from this
experience, I learned that there are many diets online, A LOT. The banana diet,
the egg diet, the oatmeal diet, the 900 calorie diet, etc. They are all so
appealing given that they promise quick results and promote the benefits of
eating the foods in these diets.
A few months ago, I decided to go straight there and
bet with a friend of mine to lose 8kg in 2 months. It might sound crazy to
some, but I was almost able to do it. And keep it long enough. Let me share
with you the one “weight loss tip” that I have found helpful.
(PS. I'm not a dietitian or doctor. I'm just sharing
my experience through this article and what I think may work for people)
Why have all the diets I've tried failed
The problem I faced when I was on a fast diet was that
I could never keep them. After eating bananas for 3 days in a row, I was
craving something crispy, freshly baked, and spicy. And then I would collapse
so hard that I would binge on an unhealthy high-carb meal for days and regain
all the weight I had lost through dieting. And the problem with me was that it
didn't give me time to lose weight. So I was either on a fad diet or not at
all.
And if you're struggling to lose weight or just watch
YouTube weight loss videos, you might know the same thing happens when you deprive
yourself of a particular type of food. The blackout, since you finally break
your diet, is especially worse on very low-calorie and restrictive diets.
Why my training never "worked"
The scientific way to lose weight is to burn more
calories than you eat. So there were times when I would exercise for an hour
and then eat very few calories during the day. To be honest, at the time I was
able to do this and thought it was completely normal, but looking back I can
see why this method didn't work. After a few days of eating less and exercising
for hours, I felt very tired. I would lose weight, but the workouts were lazy
and my diet became even more restrictive. My muscles ached very quickly and I
couldn't continue training for long. And then I would give up just because of
fatigue. A cheat day would become a week and then a month.
I tried a lot of exercises. At one point in my life, I
was very fond of dancing (I still love to dance, but I prefer strength and
weight training) and then I switched to yoga and even ballet to lose weight. I
have tried Chloe Ting's 2 Week Shredding Program so many times. But I never got
past the fifth day.
The only secret I needed to know ...
You remember the bet I told you about in the
introduction to this article. This bet and the months that followed taught me
an important lesson; the only secret I ever needed to know to lose weight:
"Consistency". Okay, that might sound like a cliché to people.
Obviously, if you work on something long enough, it will pay off to some
extent. But I really want to share it with people because, as obvious as it
sounds, I never really liked it and instead went for trendy quick fixes.
Consistency is what helped me stay on track and lose
all the weight I wanted. I tried not to view workouts or diets as "a way
to lose weight, just a chore that I have to do every day for a few weeks."
After a month, it became natural for me. I would feel lazy if I didn't exercise
every day. And eating more salads, eggs, and fewer carbs started to feel natural.
This time I know it doesn't matter what the situation,
family visits, vacations, etc. I need to do at least 30 minutes of training a
day to stay consistent with my progress.
I once read a book that said "Try to make small
changes in your daily life. Every change you make and follow will pay off in
the future (not the exact words, but you get the essence of it). . Try to make
this change in your life. Start by improving your diet: stop consuming refined
sugar for a week, then add a walk to your daily routine, then exercise, etc.
You will begin to see the change after just 1 week. It may not be a big change,
but don't see it as something you need to do to reach your goal, just think of
it as something you need to do throughout the day. the more you need to keep
the routine going. Make changes that you can stick to. There is nothing wrong
with cheating days, if you fall apart and end up gorging yourself, wake up. us
the next day and start over, see why you failed, and make changes to your diet
accordingly. Try these changes in your life and watch your body change over
time.
I will share the diet and workout I did to lose weight
in the next article. I wouldn't suggest following my exact diet as what worked
for me may not work for you. Finding the perfect diet and exercise for you is
trial and error. You will fall, but as long as you get up and start over, you
will achieve your goals.
